Mounds of fresh alfalfa recently harvested are seen all over Egypt. An important forage crop, alfalfa or lucerne is a perennial flowering legume in the Fabaceae family. Once the root system is established in the soil, alfalfa plants easily grow up to 1 meter (3.28 feet) high, and live 4 to 8 years or more depending on climate. Extremely nutritious with high protein content and highly digestible fiber, alfalfa is a good source of vitamin K, calcium, and potassium. This scene is specially endearing. Not only are the donkeys pulling their masters home, but they are pulling their dinner home. They love alfalfa!
